Objective To analyze the research current status, hotspots and trends of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer in the past 30 years in China based on bibliometrics. Methods Literature related to Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer was retrieved from China National Knowledge Infrastructure from 1st January, 1993 to 1st September, 2023. The Microsoft Excel 2019 software was employed to perform statistical description. The line chart of annual variation trend of the number of relevant literature publications was drawn. The CiteSpace software and VOSviewer software were used to analyze the number of publications by authors and research institutions, to conduct co⁃occurrence network analysis, and to conduct co⁃occurrence, clustering and burstness analyses of keywords. Results From 1993 to 2023, a total of 444 literature related to the treatment of gastric cancer with Traditional Chinese Medicine was collected in China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the annual number of publications revealed an overall fluctuating upward trend, forming multiple core teams and research institutions, mainly concerning 3 collaboration networks in terms of Nanjing, Beijing, and Shanghai, and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine, and Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine ranked the top three research institutions in terms of the number of publications. The top three authors of the number of publications were Hou Li, Liu Shenlin, and Chen Guozhong. There were 1438 keywords in total, and the most frequent keyword was gastric cancer, followed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, cell apoptosis, and experiences of famous doctors. The keywords could form 10 clusters, which were Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome type, cell apoptosis, famous doctor's experiences, cell invasion, clinical research, chemotherapy, Sijunzi Decoction, fine⁃tuning balance, and tumor inhibition rate. The results of keyword burstness analysis indicated that cell invasion, famous doctor's experiences, immune function, data mining and molecular docking were the recent main research hotspots and future research trends in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer. Conclusion The research popularity of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the treatment of gastric cancer generally expresses a fluctuating upward trend, and the research hotspots focus on cell apoptosis, chemotherapy, immune function, experiences of famous doctors, molecular docking, data mining and other aspects. The modern bioinformatics research of Traditional Chinese Medicine classic prescriptions and effective components of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the exploration and mining of etiology and pathogenesis and treatment experiences on gastric cancer, as well as the influence of Traditional Chinese Medicine on immune function of patients with gastric cancer are the future research trends in this field.
