Objective To explore the research current status, hotspots and trend of colorectal cancer ferroptosis based on CiteSpace software. Methods Literature related to colorectal cancer ferroptosis was retrieved from core database of Web of Science between 2017 and 2024. The CiteSpace 6.4.R4 software was adopted to perform visualized analysis on annual number of publications, citation frequency, publishing institutions, publishing countries, research fund and funding institutions and key words, etc. Results A total of 428 English literature was enrolled. The annual number of publications and citation frequency in literature related to colorectal cancer ferroptosis from 2017 to 2024 exhibited an overall upward trend. The highest citation frequency of literature was the published literature of Hassannia B as the first author, Fudan University was the publishing institution with the largest number of publications, and China was the country with the largest number of publications. However, its mediating centrality ranked fourth. The institution provided the most research funds in this field was the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Research on the mechanism of ferroptosis in colorectal cancer, screening and analysis of related genes and prognosis models construction and treatment based on these genes, and study on drug resistance and tumor microenvironment were the hotspots in the field of ferroptosis in colorectal cancer. Technological innovation, mechanism deepening and clinical integration were the future research trends. Conclusion Ferroptosis holds great potential in the treatment of colorectal cancer. By conducting research on related genes and exploring combined therapies, relevant targets can be sought to provide new strategies for overcoming drug resistance in colorectal cancer chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapy.
