Objective To understand the current status of health science popularization among urban community residents in Nanning, and to propose strategies to enhance health science popularization level among urban community residents in Nanning. Methods A random sampling method was adopted to select 250 community residents in Nanning, whose health science popularization was investigated by using a self⁃designed questionnaire on the current status of health science popularization among Nanning residents. Additionally, 15 health science popularization experts from different institutions and fields were randomly selected for semi⁃structured interviews. Data were collected and analyzed by employing the Colaizzi's seven⁃step method to analyze and identify themes. Results (1) The majority of residents (94.80%) primarily accessed health science popularization knowledge through the internet. The health knowledge acquired by residents mainly focused on disease prevention (87.60%), nutrition and diet (85.20%), exercise and fitness (75.60%), and mental health (69.60%), etc., whereas 60.00% of residents had participated in health science popularization knowledge lectures or activities, 28.40% believed such community⁃carried out health science popularization activities were ineffective in improving health literacy of residents. Residents expressed a preference for acquiring health knowledge through activities such as health knowledge competitions (79.20%), health consultations (71.20%), and health lectures (66.00%). (2) The semi⁃structured interviews yielded five themes as follows: the essence of health science popularization, its current status and influencing factors, its content and delivery methods, improvement of residents' acceptance of health science popularization, and the integration and utilization of health science popularization resources. Conclusion The level of health science popularization among Nanning's urban community residents is moderate, with most relying on online sources for health science popularization knowledge and showing greater interest in topics like disease prevention, nutrition and diet. To improve the situation, it is necessary to diversify access channels of health science popularization knowledge, refine the focus of community⁃based health science popularization, and integrate multiple resources to foster a new ecosystem for health science popularization in Nanning community.
