Objective To investigate the clinical effect of cheek acupuncture therapy combined with oral administration of Zhengqing Fengtongning Sustained⁃Release Tablets for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Methods A total of 150 patients with PHN were randomly divided into control group or observation group, with 75 cases in each group. The control group received conventional treatment, based on which the observation group additionally received cheek acupuncture therapy combined with oral administration of Zhengqing Fengtongning Sustained⁃Release Tablets for treatment. Both groups received a 2⁃week treatment. Pre⁃treatment and two⁃week post⁃treatment Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score for pain, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) score, inflammatory indicators including interleukin (IL)⁃6, IL⁃1β, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF⁃α), hemorheological indicators (low viscosity of whole blood, high viscosity of whole blood), and 36⁃Item Short⁃Form Healthy Survey (SF⁃36) score, pregabalin dosage, and incidence rate of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results After two weeks of treatment, both groups exhibited decreased scores of VAS for pain and PSQI, and decreased serum levels of IL⁃6, IL⁃1β, and TNF⁃α, as well as decreased low viscosity and high viscosity of whole blood as compared with before treatment; moreover, the observation group yielded lower indices as above as compared with the control group (P<0.05). After two weeks of treatment, both groups interpreted elevated scores in various dimensions of SF⁃36 and total score of SF⁃36 as compared with before treatment, and the observation group expressed higher scores in various dimensions of SF⁃36 and total score of SF⁃36 as compared with the control group (P<0.05). Pregabalin dosage of the observation group was less than that of the control group (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the total incidence rate of adverse reactions between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion Cheek acupuncture therapy combined with oral administration of Zhengqing Fengtongning Sustained⁃Release Tablets for the treatment of PHN can reduce the pain degree and inflammatory response of patients, improve sleep quality, regulate hemorheological indicators, and improve the quality of life of patients, exerting safety to a certain extent.
