Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of scalp acupuncture therapy combined with multichannel functional electrical stimulation cycling training on lower limb motor dysfunction in children with cerebral palsy. Methods A total of 84 children with cerebral palsy were selected as the research subjects, and they were assigned to control group or combined group employing the random number table method, with 42 cases in each group. The control group was treated with scalp acupuncture, whereas the combined group received scalp acupuncture therapy combined with multichannel functional electrical stimulation cycling training. Lower limb motor function (Gross Motor Function Measure⁃88 [GMFM⁃88] score), range of motion (popliteal angle, hip adductor angle, and foot dorsiflexion angle), muscle tension in gastrocnemius, hamstring, and hip adductor (Modified Ashworth Scale [MAS] classification), as well as Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scale score were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results After treatment, the D energy score, E energy score and total score of GMFM⁃88, ADL scale score, popliteal angle, hip adductor angle and foot dorsiflexion angle were higher or greater than those before treatment in the two groups, and the MAS classification of gastrocnemius muscle tension, hamstring muscle tension and hip adductor muscle tension in the two groups were lower than those before treatment, and the combined group exhibited superior improvement in the aforementioned indices as compared with the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Scalp acupuncture combined with multichannel functional electrical stimulation cycling training can ameliorate lower limb motor function, range of motion, lower limb muscle tension and ability of activities of daily living in children with cerebral palsy, with superior effect to single scalp acupuncture therapy.
