Objective To investigate the distribution characteristics of CD36⁃rs1722505 gene polymorphism in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and its correlation with coronary atherosclerosis. Methods A total of 71 patients receiving coronary angiography examination were selected, and they were assigned to type 2 diabetes mellitus group (17 cases) or control group (54 cases) according to the presence of concomitant type 2 diabetes mellitus. The general data and blood biochemical indices of both groups were collected. Genotype of CD36⁃rs1722505 in patients of both groups was detected. Severity of coronary atherosclerosis was also compared between the two groups. Results The type 2 diabetes mellitus group exhibited higher proportion of hypertension history and systolic blood pressure as compared with the control group (P<0.05). In the type 2 diabetes mellitus group, the proportions of genotype TT, TC and CC of CD36⁃rs1722505 gene were 0, 58.8%, and 41.2%, whereas in the control group, the proportions being 13.0%, 51.8%, and 35.2%, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in various genotype and allele frequency of CD36⁃rs1722505 gene between patients in the two groups (P>0.05). The proportions of double⁃vessel disease and triple⁃vessel disease of patients in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Severity of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is relatively high. However, CD36⁃rs1722505 gene polymorphism loci may not the key factors for affecting coronary atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
